Destiny 2 Lightfall secured the bronze trophy for PlayStation Blog Game of the Year 2023 Expansion of the Year.
PS.Blog Game of the Year 2023 results are now available, with winners selected by the community across 18 diverse categories, including Best PS5 Game of The Year (Marvel’s Spider-Man 2), Best Art Direction (Alan Wake 2), and Best Multiplayer Experience (Baldur’s Gate 3).
In the category of Best Expansion, Destiny 2 Lightfall got the bronze trophy, surpassing contenders like Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania and Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn. The Platinum Winners in this category is Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, Gold: Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, and Silver: Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways.
Despite its high anticipation and initial success, Destiny 2 Lightfall fell short of expectations set by previous expansions such as Witch Queen, Beyond Light, and Forsaken. At its peak on Steam, Lightfall recorded an impressive 316,651 concurrent players, breaking Destiny 2 records. However, player feedback highlighted shortcomings, citing issues with the story’s coherence, lackluster new characters, and a dearth of significant updates to PvP or Gambit modes.
The release of Destiny 2 DLC The Final Shape, marking the conclusion of Destiny’s Light and Darkness story, has been rescheduled from February 2024 to June 2024. The franchise faced a substantial revenue shortfall of about 45%, attributed in part to the underwhelming reception of Destiny 2’s Lightfall expansion. This, coupled with existing issues, contributed to a decline in the player base and reduced in-game spending, challenging Bungie’s expectations for its live games.
