Blizzard has no plans for name reservations before the Season of Discovery launch. Unlike Classic and Season of Mastery in 2019 and 2021, players won’t get the chance to secure their preferred names in advance this time.
World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery is set to launch in a few days. During this season, players will uncover fresh secrets in Azeroth, unlocking class-altering abilities. Unusual combinations like Tanking Warlocks and Mage healers will become possible. The initial level cap for the season is 25, and upon reaching this level, players will encounter a new level-25 endgame.
Prepare for a 10-player Blackfathom Deeps raid featuring revamped bosses, mechanics, and rewards. The level cap will later be raised, introducing additional endgame content.
In a Twitter thread following this, Josh Greenfield (Senior Game Producer) shares more details about the absence of name reservations. He also clarifies why the development team hasn’t released a list of realm names yet: Blizzard aims to prevent players from becoming too attached to a specific realm early on. This approach is intended to address past issues related to balance and server performance caused by player preferences.
Sorry, not happening. It’s not really a thing we are likely to do for seasons or new classic releases going forward. I understand that might be disappointing but there’s good reasons for not doing it.

Having realm names is *nice*, but its dangerous too. The longer realm names are known, the more likelihood the community is to come together and christen one realm “the good realm” to the detriment of all others. 2/10

The reality is, you can do all of your community building just fine with just a ruleset. You can say “we are rolling PvP” and start building up your discord, then on the day realms are announced you @ everyone and say “we are rolling on X”. That’s that. 4/10

Folks coming in late would ask “what is the best realm” the community would look at the numbers, and say “its Y” then that would become the universal truth in the wow zeitgeist and nothing would change that. 6/10

We have a lot of evidence that this works and a lot of evidence that publishing names too early is damaging. I understand if anyone finds it disappointing, but part of our role as custodians of these games is making these tough choices, even if we don’t like them as players. 8/10

We are taking a lot of chances with Season of Discovery, and some things are heavy handed and may come off as dismissive to player desires, but we’ve also learned a lot and are applying that.
We are so excited for next week and cannot wait to jump in with you! 10/10— Josh Greenfield (@AggrendWoW) November 24, 2023
