Overwatch 2 campaign length hinted at by Jeff Kaplan

In an interview with the Washington Post, Overwatch 2 game director Jeff Kaplan has explained how long the campaign will be for the sequel of his successful shooter. As we know by know, Overwatch 2 won’t be ‘just’ a DLC package, it will be a full fledged game to enjoy.

“I play a lot of games, and I can’t think of a single DLC or expansion of this magnitude,” Kaplan says in the interview. He doesn’t say how long the campaign will be exactly, but gives some insight on their vision. “It will be a complete story experience like you would expect from any blockbuster game.”

This is still pretty vague since Triple A games like God of War take 25 hours, but The Witcher 3 takes up to 60 hours or more. There are games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, for which the single player take 6 to 8 hours depending on the difficulty you play. So saying that the game is as big as a AAA blockbuster game doesn’t say much yet, but it keeps us guessing.

We think Kaplan is looking at games like God of War to create a story campaign, since 60 hours like The Witcher seem way too long, and per his statements, are single player campaigns like CoD too short for a ‘complete story experience’.

“There are so many people who are deeply engaged with our characters because we’ve put these heroes at the forefront,” explained Kaplan. “They would love to engage with the characters in a way that is a little bit less high pressure to them. So we felt like, you know, if we could deliver one really massive feature to our fans, it would be to blow out the co-operative side of the game.”

Overwatch 2 will come out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, and will probably see the light of day on the next-gen consoles.
