Bungie Ditches Destiny 3 for Free Destiny 2 Updates

Following the layoff employees at Bungie, new details about the company’s future have emerged. Bungie is reportedly not working on Destiny 3 and will instead focus on smaller updates for Destiny 2.

With Destiny 3 and the spin-off both off the table, Bungie plans to continue supporting Destiny 2 in a different manner. The studio will shift away from its traditional model of paid expansions, which have seen declining sales year over year, according to IGN sources.

Bungie now aims to keep and attract players through smaller-scale updates modeled after Into the Light, releasing these for free. They also plan to overhaul activities to maintain engagement with their hardcore player base. Into the Light introduced a new activity called Onslaught and exotic missions like Zero Hour and The Whisper, which is free for all players. Also a brand new raid was introduced named Pantheon.

New Path for Bungie

Due to rising development costs and industry shifts, Bungie is laying off 220 employees, or 17% of its workforce, and focusing solely on Destiny and Marathon. The company is transferring 155 roles to Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and is partnering with PlayStation Studios to spin out a new action game into a separate studio. Despite the cuts, Bungie will try to continue to deliver top-tier experiences with over 850 staff members.
