Rod Fergusson, the head of the Diablo franchise, believes that Diablo would be an excellent fit for television.
If you’ve been with us a while, you know we love brainstorming ways to bring Blizzard games to the big screen. We’ve talked about why Warcraft would be perfect, given its fantastic storylines. And now, with the success of the Fallout series on Prime Video and of course HBO’s The Last of Us, it’s clear that video game adaptations can be a hit. The collaboration between Prime Video and Bethesda has been fantastic, and the series is scoring big on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview with WindowsCentral, Rod Fergusson, the head of the Diablo franchise, discussed the possibility of adapting the Diablo series for television:
“Yeah I definitely think it could work. That’s one of the things I really liked about Diablo as an IP, is that it’s got very relatable themes because it’s The High Heavens versus The Burning Hells, and that idea of Good versus Evil. I think that’s something that could translate very well to something like that. You know, I wish I had something I could talk to you about today. But in terms of just the general idea, do I think it could work? I definitely do.”
World of Warcraft Executives on potential new Warcraft movie
Warcraft, another beloved Blizzard franchise, made its way to the big screen in 2016 but has yet to explore the realm of television/streaming. At BlizzCon 2023, IGN asked about the possibility of Warcraft branching out into TV shows or if there were plans for a new movie. With some time passing since Duncan Jones directed the first Warcraft film, there hasn’t been much discussion about a sequel:
“That was one of the big reasons why we’ve somewhat reorganized as the Warcraft Universe.” John Hight said. “Holly is part of the leadership team for that, so she’s not just overseeing WoW, that’s her baby, but she also contributes to some of the strategic decisions we have about where we want to go next. We have a full greenlight process for Warcraft. We take pitch ideas from across the team, and we also have things we like to do.
Everything begins with somebody’s passion – ‘I would like to chase this’ or ‘I believe in this.’ Then we say, ‘Okay, how does that enhance Warcraft? How does that work for Warcraft? Does it make sense for us to make a game in this genre for players that play other Warcraft games like WoW ?’”.
